Her name is Lucky, but her life was filled with despair.
Like all children living in the crowded red-light district, she grew up with little hope for a future. Her mother sold alcohol in the red-light area. She was usually left alone to play unsupervised with other children on the street. School was not an option. When Lucky was old enough, her mother began pushing her to sell alcohol. Lucky, as many in the red-light district, married young.
Her husband was a womanizer and abusive to Lucky. By the time Lucky was barely out of her teenage years when she had three small daughters and often did not have money to purchase food for them. Having heard about Love Calcutta Arts, a freedom business providing income-earning opportunities for women, Lucky went to ask for work in desperation. Priya, leader at Love Calcutta Arts, described the time when Lucky arrived. She was full of fear. Her entire demeanor was one of timidity and low self-esteem. Immediately, Priya offered Lucky a job, an opportunity to earn income with dignity. In her three-month orientation, Lucky was guided and taught to do Kantha stitching, the typical Bengali embroidery.
Soon she was making beautiful sari quilts and throws. With the income she earned, she became able to provide for her children’s needs. In the process, Lucky came to know that her life was of value. She came to know the love of the Living God and gave her life to Him. She now serves in outreach ministry to children in the red-light district. She also enjoys leading worship in the fellowship of believers that meets regularly in the red-light district.
Lucky’s life is a testimony of God’s transformational work in the life of a mother, a family, and a community! Stories like these are happening every day through the work of Bridges4Justice and their partners like Love Calcutta Arts.
